<lj:music>washing machine...washing machine</lj:music>

IU is reviewing my application for the MLS program! AHH I should hear by the end of the week. I hope everything goes well. Roger says he has a good feeling about it and I hope he is right. He also said my abstract for my thesis looked good, so who knows. Maybe I will go back down there sometime this week when I have time off work and look around the place...umm sounds like a plan.

Sigh.

I had a dream that Robert said my thesis was the 4th best one in the class, who dreams like that (other then curly?)

Abstract:

Orlan’s Re-figuration of the Body in The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan: From Gender Performativity to the Cyborg.

French artist Orlan is the first to use plastic surgery as a platform for artistic expression. Her performance piece The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan consists of several surgical operations done to her body from 1990 to 1993. Orlan declares herself a saint because of her ability to transcend pain with only local anesthesia during the operations. My thesis focuses on Orlan’s capacity to reshape and overcome her body as an artistic interpretation for women. I contextualize Orlan as a French artist and one clearly involved in French philosophical debates from the events of May 1968 onward. The blending of her surgeries, photographs and ideas shows that her work comes from a strong theoretical and methodical background. Orlan’s invention of carnal art is consistent with many values of French feminists. I chose the French feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray as a comparative study to Orlan’s sensory experience during the surgical performances. I connect Luce Irigaray’s thoughts to those of queer theorist Judith Butler and her notion of gender performativity. The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan takes Butler’s theory to the extreme, as Orlan carves gender into her flesh. Next I discuss Donna Haraway’s feminist cyborg as a contrast to with Judith Butler’s culturally constructed sexed body. The cyborg has the capacity to change its identity and self through the aid of technology. Through this discourse I prove that Orlan’s surgical performances situate themselves between these radical theories. I use pain, self awareness, and religious traditions to demonstrate the application of each theory in Orlan’s piece The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Therefore, this thesis contextualizes, critically engages, and continues discourse on the “feminisms” of Orlan’s artistic performances.

I am excited, why? I am going to Milan in March. It is far away, but I know it will come quickly. I wish I did something over this break, but I was so loaded with homework that it was impossible. So, to make up for it, off to Milan!! The plane ticket out of Gatwich to Milan for only £58!!! I just need to get out of here a way from certian individuals. Book reviews suck, but feminist writing over the other rulz!

AHHH I am so excited...Milan and I am going to try my best to go to Florence!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!
